THE CHALLENGES

NLS required a contractor who can support agile software development related to NLS Information Technology systems. NLS information systems are using obsolete technology which they want to upgrade as they want to migrate them to the cloud.

The enhancement of the system had to be strongly 50 compliant as the targeted end-users were Visually disabled. Moreover, the major challenge that happened with LOC NLS projects was the lack of documentation of the existing application.

THE SOLUTION

KSApex provided software maintenance and enhancement of the NLS Braille and Audio by Download (BARD) website. This PHP, MySQL-based website allows NLS patrons to download NLS-produced talking and braille books and magazines.

A thorough Agile approach was taken in building use cases, acceptance criteria, development, system testing, regression testing. Test case documents were also provided as a part of the testing phases. Our team enhanced the existing API called BARD API and created new endpoints for BARD Mobile App.

KEY TAKE AWAY

  • None of the industry-standard agile ALM tools are section 508 compliant for a blind person to use it fluently hence, we have created custom agile templates using excel.
  • Due to a lack of documentation of the existing application, we used best practices & converted code from PERL to PHP.
  • As NLS supports 95% of the blind population, we paid extra attention to functionality testing using JAWS, WAVE and NVDA so that end-user can use the BARD more fluently.

BENEFITS

The custom agile templates created specifically for the project by KSApex make it a lot easier for future modifications of the BARD. With the sheer efforts of our team to understand the high-level requirements and end-user capabilities, visually challenged people can now grasp knowledge without any inconveniences.
